2019 CHRISTMAS POTLUCK

We had 41 members and their families attend this year, and we all had a really fun time and a very tasty meal!  Thanks to all for the delicious potluck dinner!

OUR GIFT TO MEDFORD FIRE STATION NO. 4

The C.A.R.E. Club Licensing Class instructors presented a gift to the Medford Fire Station No. 4 Firefighters on Saturday Sept 14th, 2019.
These stanchions and ropes are meant to protect the antique fire hose cart they have on display in their training room, which they are very proud to have as a record of the traditions of firefighting service to the Medford area.   This is our Club's way of saying "Thank You" to Medford's Fire Chief, and the many fine firefighters not only at Station No. 4, but all of Medford's firefighters, for allowing us to use their state of the art training room to teach emergency preparedness through ham radio to our community.

The Club received a very nice email letter from Fire Chief Fish, as follows:
Mr. Hadley,

It was brought to my attention that the Cascade Amateur Radio Enthusiasts did something very special for Medford Fire-Rescue.  Through conversations with David Ackles, your organization learned we had intentions to place a barrier around our historic hose cart, located in our Training Room at Fire Station #4.  David filled me in and also sent pictures of the very professional and classy rope barrier now in place around our hose cart.  I would like to extend my deepest thanks to you and C.A.R.E. for this wonderful gift.  The crews truly enjoy having your very courteous and tidy group at the Fire Station for your amateur radio trainings.
Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and respect of Medford Fire-Rescue's history.

Sincere thanks,

Brian Fish | Fire Chief
City of Medford, Oregon | Medford Fire-Rescue

SEPTEMBER 2019 FOX HUNT

Our September 21st 2019 Fox Hunt Report:

The Fox was planted by Bruce (KG7TUO) after Nick (KJ7GHP) the winner of our last hunt did all the prep work but fell ill before the start. Bruce's YL Sheri (AK7SB) monitored the Fox while Bruce worked the start point to get a count of starters, provide technical tips if needed, and see them off.
The Fox consisted of a 12 1/2 foot PVC mast in the bed of a pickup with Bruce's barbed wire vertical dipole at the top and a Baofeng UV5R transmitter on low power. Audio was provided through the VOX function of the Baofeng and fed by a Sony digital voice recorder with a 12 hour audio file using the Club's call sign.
The Fox was located just off McAndrews in a small city park. Nick picked a great location. Even though the mast and antenna were easily visible from McAndrews, it was psychologically invisible because once folks got that far up McAndrews they were fairly certain the Fox was on Roxy Ann. Of course upon arrival at Roxy, they'd find the Fox behind them!
Seven people in five teams started out from the corner of Garfield and Kenyon just after 1pm. Only one team called it quits before finding the Fox citing errands they had to tend to.  After a dismal last place finish in the Clubs last hunt due to using a high tech directional array on the roof of his car, Pat Cunningham (KD7MPA) was first to the Fox this time.  That array was on the roof but he said he didn't trust it and was using one of the tape measure Yagi's!
Next to find the transmitter was Eric Chelgren (KG7GFE) who was second place in the last hunt as well

JULY 2019 FOX HUNT

Our July 2019 Fox Hunt on the 27th was attended by a small, dedicated group of transmitter hunters, and the winner was one of our recent License Class students, Nick, KJ7GHP. Thank you to all who participated!

PEAR BLOSSOM PARADE 2018
We were well represented in the Pear Blossom Parade April 14, 2018.  We decorated a trailer in a very patriotic manner.  We had a great display of old and new radios in keeping with the parade theme - "Timeless Treasures, People and Places",  We also had a 2 meter radio on speakers with walkers using HT radios to let the crowd (mostly kids) talk over the radio with our float riders!  Plus, some CW tones going out over another speaker.  We even had business cards promoting our free licensing classes, and we were able to give out about 700 of them!  Enjoy the pictures below!

2017 CHRISTMAS POTLUCK PICTURES

CLUB ANTENNA BUILDS 2016
We had two antenna building classes on September 24th, 2016 - many thanks to the Smullin Center for allowing us an extra day in one of their classrooms. We had 5 student builders in the morning "Tape Measure Antenna" class, and a whopping 20 student builders in our afternoon "Ed Fong J-Pole" class.

CLUB BBQ 2016 PICTURES
We had loads of fun and good food at our BBQ - we had 26 people in attendance!  We also invited our current class students at the time to introduce them to our wonderful club members... and guess what?  A bunch of them joined up and are now wonderful club members too!
Enjoy the pictures!
